Full-day excursion to Great Ocean Road
There are several roads in the world that boast of being the world’s most scenic stretch of coastline. Those who have driven along the Great Ocean Road in Australia will agree that this is definitely one of them!
The road was carved out by hand by soldiers returning from the First World War and is dedicated to all those who did not make it home, also making the road the world’s largest war memorial.
Great Ocean Road officially starts in the town of Torquay, a good 100 km south-west of Melbourne. The official end point of the road is the town of Allansford, not that far from Warrnambool. The road stretches around 240 km along the dramatic coastline, where the waves of the South Sea relentlessly eat into the landscape.
Today, you’ll see it for yourself. You depart from Melbourne in the morning and head for Torquay. From here, the stops at the most famous landmarks along the route come one after another. Enjoy the impressive sight of the surfers taming the waves. Keep an eye out for the koalas sitting in the treetops at Cape Otway. Visit the charming little town of Apollo Bay, where there’s time to each lunch at one of the town’s cosy cafés. In the afternoon, the Twelve Apostles (which are no longer twelve, as the sea is constantly eating away at them…) and Loch Ard Gorge await you, with their stories of countless shipwrecks. All day long, you have a view of the sea on one side and the rolling hills with their eucalyptus trees, shrubs or small villages on the other side. There are lots of stops on the way, and the guide will tell you all about the nature, culture and history.
You’re back in Melbourne in the evening.
