Full-day excursion to Kuranda
Visit the small town of Kuranda in the rainforest north of Cairns.
From the middle of the 19th century, the mining adventure really took off in Australia. In the small town of Heberton, just over 100 km west of Cairns, they mined tin. The tin had to be transported to the coast, and equipment and workers had to be transported inland to the mine. A railway was the answer.
A station was therefore built in the middle of the rainforest. Passengers could buy refreshments here, and even spend the night at the small hotel. Over time, the stepping stone evolved into the village of Kuranda that it is today.
The train journey from Cairns to Kuranda remains perhaps one of the world’s most scenic train journeys to this day. From Cairns, the 100-year-old, restored train climbs 327 metres above sea level. The train has to go through 15 tunnels and over 37 bridges with views of rainforest and waterfalls along the way. It takes 3 hours, so sit back and enjoy the ride!
Having arrived in Kuranda, you have time to explore the village. Explore the local market and find a cosy café where you can have lunch.
The journey back to Cairns is by Skyrail – a cable car that glides slowly over the treetops back to the city.
The price includes: Transport, Kuranda Scenic Rail and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Please note that the train is an old, restored train, so there is no air conditioning. You should therefore remember to bring water with you for the trip
