Sydney

If you’re going to Australia, one of the country’s largest cities – Sydney – is a must on your tour.

Sydney is built up around the world’s largest natural harbour, and with its waterside location, surrounded by green national park, it is also one of the world’s most scenically located cities.

You get it all here: History and culture, a fabulous culinary scene, architecture, beaches and not least sights such as Sydney Harbour and the Opera House, the Blue Mountains and the cosy suburbs.

Uluru

You might have heard of Ayers Rock, but today this famous sight and trademark goes by its original name: Uluru.

One of the world’s largest monoliths, Uluru rises up out of the desolate desert in the heart of Australia. Not only can it feel overwhelming to stand in the middle of nowhere, but it is also a completely magical experience to see how the colours change at sunset from rust red to orange and later to grey and then completely black, the further the sun goes down. And with the sun gone for the day, you are left with the most beautiful starry sky, unpolluted by the light from the cities.

The Great Barrier Reef

You will find many “biggests” in Australia, and the Great Barrier Reef is no exception.

Off the north-east coast of Australia, you’ll find the world’s biggest coral reef. The coral reef is a UNESCO world heritage site, and once you’ve snorkelled among the beautiful corals, turtles and colourful fish, you’ll understand why.

You’ll experience the coral reef right up close, kitted out with snorkelling or scuba diving gear – an unforgettable experience.

The Whitsundays & Whitehaven Beach

In the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland, right in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef, you’ll find 74 picturesque tropical islands collectively known as the Whitsundays. Most of these islands are uninhabited and their natural surroundings are well-preserved.

The Whitsundays are best experienced by boat. Sail to Whitehaven Beach, whose powdery white sands have been named the world’s most beautiful beach multiple times. Here, you can swim in the crystal-clear waters and walk to the Hill Inlet lookout point for stunning views over the entire area.

Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s most iconic coastal routes. It stretches 243 km along Australia’s southern coast, from Allansford in the west to Torquay in the east, just about 100 km from Melbourne.

This road will take you past dramatic rock formations known as the Twelve Apostles and offer scenic views over the bays and beaches along the coast. Along the way, you’ll drive through charming coastal towns and fishing villages, offering a glimpse into local Australian culture.

Besides being a unique self-drive route, the Great Ocean Road is also the world’s largest war memorial. It was carved out by hand by soldiers who returned from World War I in memory of those who never came back home.

K’gari (Fraser Island)

The world’s largest sand island, K’gari, lies off Australia’s eastern coast. You might know it as Fraser Island, but in 2021, it officially reverted back to its original name, K’gari.

The island is famed for its spectacular sand beaches, lush rainforests, and crystal-clear lakes. When visiting K’gari, you can look forward to a drive along the island’s ‘main road’ – the 75 Mile Beach – where you can admire the stunning coastline.

Like the Great Barrier Reef, the island is a UNESCO world heritage site due to its diverse wildlife and unique landscape.

Other highlights of Australia

Australia is vast and offers a massive array of exciting highlights. On our tours, you can also experience:

  • Located in the south, Melbourne is among Australia’s largest cities (it often competes with Sydney for the top spot) and exudes a relaxed and cultural atmosphere. Explore the city’s hidden lanes and alleys, enjoy the unique culinary scene and excellent shopping opportunities, or take a trip along the Great Ocean Road, renowned as the world’s most beautiful coastal drive.
  • On the east coast of Australia, north of Sydney, you’ll find lovely Brisbane, Australia’s third-largest city. It’s a splendid city with plenty of charm, albeit a bit quieter than the country’s two largest cities. Explore the city or take a trip to Lamington National Park, for instance, where you can experience lush rainforests and beautiful hiking trails.
  • Unique national parks await you in Northern Territory, including the UNESCO-protected Kakadu National Park. It is one of the country’s biggest – and perhaps the most beautiful – national parks, offering a treasure trove of exciting nature, wildlife and cultural experiences with 35,000-year-old cave paintings.

Frequently asked questions about travelling to Australia

Heading to Australia for the first time? Maybe you have some questions that haven’t been answered? We’ve gathered answers to some of the questions we often receive regarding our tours to Australia.

When is the best time to travel to Australia?

For most of Australia, there are four seasons which are the opposite of European ones:

  • Spring: September to November
  • Summer: December to February
  • Autumn: March to May
  • Winter: June to August

In the northern part of Australia, e.g., in Darwin and Cairns, the year is divided into the rainy season and dry season:

  • Rainy season: October to May
  • Dry season: May to September

Most people prefer to travel during our winter months when it’s summer in Australia. However, Australia offers unique experiences all year round. You can read more about the seasons and the benefits of travelling in each season here.

H3: Do you need a visa for Australia?

Yes. As a UK citizen, you will most likely need a valid tourist visa (Evisitor) to enter Australia.

Make sure to apply for your visa well in advance of your departure to Australia. You can read more about this on our practical info page.

What vaccinations are necessary for travelling to Australia?

We know a lot about tours, but we’re not doctors. Therefore, we recommend contacting a specialist doctor, your GP, or an authorised vaccination clinic for guidance on which vaccinations you need (and which you might already have).

However, be aware of the rules regarding yellow fever, especially if you’re entering Australia from a country where yellow fever is present. Some countries require proof of a yellow fever vaccination upon entry. Always keep your vaccination certificate in your hand luggage when travelling.

What can you bring into Australia?

Australia has very strict rules about what you can bring into the country, such as fruit and other fresh produce. We recommend you never bring these items.

Upon arrival at the airport, signs will indicate what you can and cannot bring with you. Bins are provided for any items you’re not allowed to bring in.

Do you need special sun protection in Australia?

It’s a good idea to be especially mindful of sun protection while in Australia.

Australia has one of the highest UV indexes in the world, so even when temperatures are not hot, the UV index can often be very high – even during the Australian winter months.

Therefore, use sunscreen with a high factor, wear light shirts and trousers that cover your arms and legs, and seek shade whenever possible.

H3: What is it like to drive in Australia?

Driving in Australia is a fantastic way to explore the country.

In Australia, they drive on the left side of the road, just like in the UK, and you can use your UK driving licence without any issues.

However, when driving in a new country, it’s always a good idea to pay special attention to local speed limits, road layouts, and wildlife, which can be different from what we’re used to back home. Drive carefully and attentively, and you’ll have no problems driving in Australia.
