Corcovado National Park is one of the world’s most biodiverse locations. Here, extraordinary experiences await those who dream of seeing rare animals and untouched nature.

In Corcovado, you might encounter playful monkeys swinging from branch to branch, or perhaps, catch a very rare glimpse of a shy jaguar moving silently through the jungle under the cover of darkness. The park is also home to many other creatures, such as anteaters, sloths, parrots, and the tapir.

If you long for an authentic, adventurous nature experience surrounded by untouched rainforest and rare animals, then Corcovado is a must!

A unique ecosystem at the heart of the rainforest

Corcovado is scenically located on the Pacific Coast in southwestern Costa Rica, surrounded by lush rainforest. The rainforest sprawls over more than 41,000 hectares, covering up to 40% of the Osa Peninsula.

You can access it from places like Drake Bay, famous for its beautiful beaches and rich marine life. Not far from there, you’ll also find San Gerardo de Dota, a mountain area enveloped in a fog forest, home to the beautiful quetzal bird. About 20 km from Drake Bay, there’s Caño Island, one of the best snorkelling spots in Costa Rica.

The diverse nature, offering a variety of captivating landscapes including lagoons, swamps, rivers, forests, and sandy beaches, creates a flourishing habitat for both wildlife and vegetation, making Corcovado National Park one of Central America’s most unique ecosystems.

A crucial factor supporting the development of this remarkable ecosystem is the park’s protection of one of the world’s most threatened rainforests – a preservation pivotal for the survival of countless species in the area.

Abundant wildlife and protected species

Corcovado National Park is home to a wide array of animal species, including 6,000 insect species, more than 350 bird species, 140 mammal species, as well as 117 amphibian and reptile species, several of which are endangered and therefore protected in the park. This makes Corcovado a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and a place for unforgettable wildlife encounters.

During a tour to Corcovado, you’re guaranteed to experience thrilling encounters with nature’s wildlife. You might, for instance, be fortunate enough to see sloths, anteaters, and pumas, or one of the four monkey species that inhabit the park: the howler monkey, white-faced capuchin, squirrel monkey, and spider monkey. These playful monkeys often roam in groups of 5 to 30 individuals, swinging from branch to branch through the lush terrain, offering a good chance of spotting them on a hike through the rainforest.

Additionally, the national park boasts one of the world’s largest populations of the scarlet macaw, noted for its stunning appearance.

When is the best time to visit Corcovado?

The ideal time to tour Corcovado is between December and April, Costa Rica’s dry season. Travelling during this period often means sunny weather with little rain, making it advantageous for hiking in the national park as the trails will be dry and more accessible.

If you tour between May and November – during the green season – you’ll experience the rainforest at its most lush. The rain brings the jungle to life, making its nature even more green and vibrant. If you appreciate a genuine nature experience and don’t mind a few muddy trails and changing weather, this is a fantastic opportunity to get close to nature. Be aware, however, that the park is closed in October due to the rain.
