The African continent offers a host of exciting honeymoon destinations that not only provide wonderful experiences, but also R&R for two.
Just need to find the perfect honeymoon?
Here are our five suggestions for unique honeymoon destinations in Africa!
Have you always dreamed of safari experiences in the wilderness combined with a genuine, exotic beach paradise? Then a safari in Tanzania rounding off with a beach holiday in Zanzibar may be the perfect destination for you!
Tanzania is one of the world’s best safari countries, where the ancient ecosystem of Serengeti National Park forms a fabulous setting for wonderful safari experiences.
In Serengeti, you can experience an array of animals on the daily game drives, such as buffaloes, wildebeest, lions, giraffes, elephants, hippos, leopards and a host of other wild animals and birds. And to add that extra spice – for those who wish to get even closer to nature – you can stay at wild camps, where, as soon as you open your eyes, you can go out and look for animals on the savannah, which just goes on and on into the horizon.
If you want to take the safari to whole new heights, you can also look down on the wonderful animals from the basket of a hot air balloon. Stare into each other’s eyes, give yourself a pinch and enjoy the moments together.
After some adventure-packed days on safari, it’s time to fly on to the palm-lined beach, lapping waves and relaxation. Zanzibar bids you welcome with fabulous white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, azure sea and a colourful coral reef. Relax, enjoy each other, read a book or quench your thirst with a delicious, exotic drink.
There is also ample opportunity to discover Zanzibar’s other delights. Explore Stone Town’s winding streets, experience the beautiful Arabian architecture or see red monkeys in Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, which is home to some of Zanzibar’s beautiful flora and fauna.
If you’ve always dreamed of coming face to face with the unique gorillas, Uganda is the perfect destination for your honeymoon.
Uganda is one of the world’s best places to experience the fascinating mountain gorillas, as around half of the world’s wild gorillas live here – among other places in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, which you will visit.
You experience the nature at close quarters in your quest to see the unique apes, as you make your way through areas of creepers and undergrowth. Gorillas can be curious creatures, so you may get to enjoy a close encounter with the gentle giants. Sitting and studying these incredible animals is an extraordinary experience you’ll never forget.
In addition to the unique gorillas, you may also see man’s closest living relative in the animal world: the chimpanzee. It’s fascinating to witness these human-like creatures going about their daily business and to see how they live in the Kyambura Gorge area. The clever monkeys are shy, but your guide knows the area and is highly experienced at tracking the chimpanzees.
When it comes to safari, Uganda also offers adventurous experiences. Discover, for example, diverse wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park, where more than 650 bird species and 95 species of mammal live, including lions, leopards, antelopes, elephants and buffaloes.
The national park also has very diverse scenery with savannah, swamp and forest. Make a stop at the equator and immortalise the experience with a photo of the two of you standing, one in each hemisphere.
Kenya is one of the classic safari countries where you will find a wealth of excellent national parks, reserves and areas of natural beauty just waiting to give you an unforgettable honeymoon.
In Amboseli National Park, you can experience an array of fascinating safari animals, but what make the national park so special is its huge herds of elephants. The vegetation in the park is sparse, making it easier to find the animals. When you wake up in your lodge in Amboseli, you wake up to a fabulous panoramic view of the majestic Kilimanjaro and the stunning savannah.
You can also visit the breathtaking Great Rift Valley, which stretches 5,000 km through eastern Africa. Lake Naivasha is located at the highest point of the gorge and is, among other things, known for its vervet monkeys, abundance of birds, hippos and giraffes.
For many people, the highlight of Kenya is almost certainly Masai Mara. The game reserve has a huge concentration of wildlife, including leopards, elephants, gazelles, lions and cheetahs. The beautiful plain with its characteristic acacia trees forms the setting for exquisite safari experiences.
And although the animal experiences are perhaps the highlight, a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum and a couple of days’ R&R are not to be sniffed at either.
In Nairobi, you can explore the world-famous Danish writer Karen Blixen’s former administration building, which today houses the Karen Coffee Garden café. The café is surrounded by a cosy, romantic garden where you can walk hand in hand and feel the presence of history.
Spend a few days relaxing in Mombasa, for example, where you can enjoy newly married life by the edge of the pool or in the shade of the palms at the water’s edge. Looking for more adventure? Then how about a tour of Mombasa’s colourful city centre or a romantic evening cruise in a dhow?
Unique nature, outstanding safari, big city vibes and possibly a beach holiday, too. You can enjoy all this on your honeymoon if you choose our 3-in-1 holiday: Victoria Falls, Botswana & Cape Town.
From day one, the honeymoon will take your breath away. First stop in this great continent is Victoria Falls, a wild experience for everyone. The magnitude of the waterfall is unique and provides an insight into the enormous forces of nature. Go for your first walk as a married couple along the beautiful waterfall – a memory that will last a lifetime. As an extra spice, you can also experience the waterfall from above in a helicopter.
After your first encounter with nature, it’s safari time. Chobe National Park in Botswana offers unspoilt nature inhabited by animals such as elephants, buffaloes, cheetahs, lions, leopards and a whole host of birds.
After your magnificent nature and animal experiences, it’s time for Cape Town. And the South African city has everything the heart desires. Go shopping in the beautiful harbour area, visit romantic vineyards in the surrounding wine country or get a glimpse into the past with a visit to Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned. Alternatively, if you’re more into nature, you can trek to the top of Table Mountain. In short: Cape Town has it all.
If you need a few days’ R&R following these amazing experiences, you can choose to round off your holiday on the paradise island of Mauritius, which is home to swaying palms, white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters and beautiful, colourful coral reefs.
Enjoy relaxing as a couple and completely unwind before married life begins in earnest. The island is romantic and offers excellent food, beautiful scenery and the perfect end to an unforgettable honeymoon.
The African continent offers wonderful experiences when it comes to one of life’s most important holidays.
