In 2017, Trine visited Sri Lanka with her family. Read about what she experienced on the tour below.

Sigiriya

Sri Lanka is an amazingly beautiful, lush country.

We saw impressive ruin complexes, lots of elephants, beautiful mountains, green fields, white beaches and blue sea. Sri Lanka is still a largely unspoiled, authentic country.

Two of our top experiences were a visit to the Lion Rock of Sigiriya and a safari in Minneriya National Park.

We were driven to Sigiriya Rock or the Lion Rock in the morning. Some people set off before breakfast to climb the rock before too many other tourists arrive.

The guide told us about the history of the area, and then we set off up the impressive rock, which rises dramatically in the landscape.

Most people will be able to manage the climb to the top. There are a lot of stairs to climb, but you do so at a sedate pace with stops along the way. Arriving at the top, we were richly rewarded with the ancient ruins and the stunning views of the green landscape with its jungle and mountains.

The ruin complex around and on the top of the rock testifies to the existence of the old royal town located here back in 477. You cannot fail to be impressed by the ruins at the top, and the large lion paws that formed part of the magnificent entrance to the palace at the top.

We also had a wonderful time on the Jeep safari to see elephants. There is a safari in or near to Minneriya National Park. There are a couple of national parks close to each other, and the owner of the Jeep, who is the driver on the safari, knows where the elephants are and so takes you to the national park where they are.

Minneriya

We started by jumping into our little Jeep, which was big enough for our family of four. The driver took us to Kaudulla National Park, which is located next to Minneriya National Park.

We drove a little way into the park and soon saw what we had come for: 🙂 A herd of elephants standing and grazing with their young. We stopped the Jeep and had time to just stand and enjoy these impressive animals.

We made several stops around the national park, where we could just enjoy the sight of the large herds of elephants with their cute young of different ages.

A wonderful experience for the whole family 🙂
