Half-day tour to Tonle Sap Lake and the floating villages
From the morning hours, you can look forward to a fantastic half-day tour to the fishing communities at Tonle Sap Lake. It is like stepping 75 years back in time to see how they lived their lives out here in these lush surroundings.
Tone Sap Lake is just 15 km south of Siem Reap and is South East Asia’s largest freshwater lake. The lake is an important part of Cambodia’s economy and pantry with abundant wildlife and more than 300 fish species and 100 bird species. The size of the lake varies widely from 3000 km² in the dry season (November – May) to 10,000 km² in the rainy season (June – October).
The excursion takes you by car and then boat to one of the many fishing villages around the lake, where you have the opportunity to go for a walk through the village, stop to see and hear about how life is lived for the many families who primarily sustain themselves on fishing. Most families live along the banks of the lake in characteristic houses that stand on long stilts, allowing them to cope with the high water level in the rainy season, when the narrow streets in the village also turn into small canals. In the dry season, when the water level is low, the tall stilts are in full view, so each season has its own charm. Depending on the season, you will either visit the fishing village Kampong Phluk or Kampong Khleang.
With solid ground back under your feet, your tour takes you back to the hotel in Siem Reap.
This excursion is open to TourCompass’ own guests only.
