HomeBike ride on Xi’an city wall

Bike ride on Xi’an city wall

Xi’an city wall is probably the pride of the city. In China, virtually all of the old city walls have been demolished, but Xi’an has managed to preserve its wall by restoring it and cleaning the moat. The locals tend to use the wall for a quick walk or run after work and school, while tourists cycle along the top of it.

There are four gateways to the city wall, representing the four corners of the globe. At each gate, there are stairs leading up to the wall itself. At the top of the wall, you will be kitted out with a bike, and the saddle will be adjusted to your height.

The city wall is 13.7 km, and along the wall there are beautiful red lanterns and old watchtowers. The bike ride gives you a good view of Xi’an, and you get to see the city from a very different angle – from a height of 12 metres.

Inside the city wall is the old town with its traditional buildings and temples, and outside is the newer district with high-rise buildings and car-filled streets.

You can stop along the way for a little rest, and to enjoy the peace and quiet away from the hectic life below or just to enjoy the view of the city full of contrasts.
