An adventure in Mindo’s enchanting cloud forest

Mindo’s enchanting 500 km² cloud forest sits less than 2 hours by car from Quito and is home to diverse plant and animal life, including more than 500 registered bird species. If you are interested in gorgeous nature and beautiful birds, a visit to Mindo’s lush cloud forest is a must.

You are picked up in Quito early in the morning, after which you travel through the wonderful mountainous landscape to Bellavista Cloud Forest Lodge, situated inside Mindo’s lush cloud forest. You are served breakfast at the lodge before you go to explore the rainforest.

The area around the lodge is home to many bird species, and even as you enjoy your breakfast, you can spot some of the many hummingbirds that live in the lodge’s lush surroundings through the restaurant’s large windows. From the porch at the lodge, you can often spot more than 6 hummingbird species.

After breakfast, your trip continues into the enchanting rainforest alongside one of the lodge’s nature guides. While you enjoy the lush surroundings, your nature guide keeps an eye out for the birds of the forest, telling you about the various exciting bird species that live in the area, as well as regarding the area’s unique ecosystem.

One can never truly know what bird species await when you head into the mysterious cloud forest, as every hike in the forest reveals something new – even for those who visit the rainforest every day. You will likely see some of the forest’s many gorgeous hummingbirds, but you may also see the magnificent plate-billed mountain toucan, or perhaps even the Andean cock-of-the-rock, which can only be found in the cloud forests of the Andes.

After the exciting hike through the forest, a delicious complimentary lunch awaits back at the lodge, after which you have some time to explore the area on your own. In the afternoon, you go back through the beautiful mountain landscape to your hotel in Quito.

Remember to bring: Good shoes, a rain jacket, a warm jumper for the afternoon, a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and mosquito repellent.
