Hike to the Sierra Negra volcano (morning)
Come on a fantastic hike to the 1,490-metre-high Sierra Negra volcano. The enormous shield volcano is around 90 metres deep and its crater has a radius of more than 9.5 km, making it one of the world’s largest volcanoes. Sierra Negra is also one of the Galapagos Islands’ most active volcanoes, last erupting in 2018. However, there is no need to worry as the local authorities will, of course, close the area if there is any risk of eruption.
From Puerto Villamil, you have around a 45-minute drive to the starting point. From here, a scenic 12-kilometres hike in the volcanic landscape awaits you. Along the way, your skilled guide will provide fascinating information about the volcano and the surrounding flora and fauna.
The route takes you along marked trails, but you will be walking on loose volcanic rocks, so good walking shoes are a must. It is a long walk, but not technically difficult, making it suitable for most people in reasonable shape.
You will also see the nearby Chico volcano on the way with its barren, moon-like landscape.
Your packed lunch (included) is enjoyed en route in the adventurous surroundings.
Remember to bring: Good walking shoes, a rain jacket, a sun hat, sunglasses and backpack with plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen.
