What can you experience in Cape Town?

Cape Town is brimming with interesting sights.

We’ve suggested a few things you might like to experience in and around the city, whether you’re interested in South Africa’s gripping history, unique nature experiences or diverse culture.

Fascinating and enthralling history

In Cape Town, you have ample opportunity to delve into the fascinating history of the city and the country.

  • You can learn about the apartheid regime on a visit to the museum island, Robben Island. Used as a prison since the 1600s, the island is especially famous for having housed, among others, Nelson Mandela, who was a political prisoner there from 1964–1982 under the apartheid regime. The island has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
  • If you’re interested in learning more about the country’s slave history, Slave Lodge is the place to visit. The museum building is one of the oldest buildings in South Africa, which has also served as a prison, a post office and the Supreme Court. However, it was once also home to 1,000 slaves – around the corner from Spin Street, the slave trading centre.
  • Discover one of South Africa’s oldest buildings, the Castle of Good Hope, which offers unique history. The castle, which served as a city fortress, was built by the Dutch in the 17th century. Today, the castle houses, among other things, the Castle Military Museum, and is the venue for many ceremonial events. Discover the history of the country at the castle, where you will find a bakery, prison cells and much more besides.

Breathtaking and unique nature experiences

Cape Town and the area around it offer unique nature experiences.

  • In Cape Town itself is the beautiful and famous Tafelberg, or Table Mountain, as it is also known. If magnificent scenery is your thing, the mountain is definitely worth exploring. From the highest point, which is 1,086 metres above sea level, you get a fantastic view over the entire city. You can reach the top either on foot on a scenic hike or by taking the pleasant cable car, enjoying the amazing views all the way up.
  • If you want to explore further afield, you can drive along the beautiful coastal road along Chapman’s Peak Drive down to the Cape of Good Hope. The drive offers some exciting stops at the cosy Simon’s Town and Boulders Beach, famous for its many penguins. The goal is Cape Point, from which you enjoy a wonderful view of beautiful beaches, breathtaking bays and amazing valleys.
  • Not far from Cape Town is South Africa’s scenic wine country, Cape Winelands. The area, which is a sea of vineyards, offers a fantastic landscape with row upon row of green vines with scenic mountains in the background in charming surroundings. There are various wine regions, with Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl some of the most popular.

Fascinating and diverse culture

Cape Town also offers experiences for those interested in wine, delicious food and shopping.

  • If you’re interested in wine, a visit to one of the many wine areas should definitely be on your list of things to see and do in Cape Town. There are several wine regions in and outside Cape Town. Visit the historic winery, Groot Constantia, which is close to the city centre, and learn about the wine production here. Naturally, on your visit, you also have the opportunity to taste the delicious drops.
  • Cape Town is also a city for you if you’re into shopping. The city offers many different shopping centres where you can shop til you drop. Shopping centres such as Canal Walk Shopping Centre, Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre and The Bay Harbour Market are all worth a visit.
  • When hunger strikes, explore one of Cape Town’s many food markets to sample the local produce. Fill yourself up with delicious and exciting food at Neighbourgoods Market, V&A Food Market or City Bowl Market. In addition to great food markets, Cape Town has a host of fabulous restaurants. And why not try the South African cuisine, which includes ostrich, springbok and even crocodile?

We look forward to welcoming you on one of our many exciting tours to Cape Town.
