Full-day excursion to Hakone National Park at Mount Fuji
Ahead of you awaits a lovely day with plenty of fresh air and one of Japan’s most iconic parks, Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The national park is located at the foot of Japan’s most famous landmark, the volcano Mount Fuji.
On a clear day, you may be lucky enough to enjoy several glimpses of the magnificent 3,776-metre-high Mount Fuji. The volcano last erupted in 1708, but it is still considered active. Its beautiful, symmetrical shape has inspired painters and writers for centuries, which is also one of the reasons for it becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.
The tour today starts in front of the “LOVE” sculpture in Shinjuku at 7.50 am, which you have to make your own way to. Here, you will meet your guide and a driver.
After around an hour and a half’s drive, you’ll arrive at the first visit of the tour, the ninja village, Shinobi No Sato, where you can live out your ninja fantasies and enjoy a ninja performance. You can also stroll through the village and enjoy the view of the fine Japanese houses and gardens.
Afterwards, a Japanese lunch made with fresh, local ingredients is served.
After a delicious lunch, the tour heads by bus to the top of Owakudani, where you have a view of the active volcanic valley, Owakudani, better known as Great Boiling Valley. Here, you can see the steam rising from the mountain, as the hot water flows beneath the large rocks. Take a walk through the steaming rocks and see if you can spot Mount Fuji in the distance. You then have the opportunity to sample the black “kuro-tamago” eggs, which take on their unique colour when they are boiled in water from the hot springs. Eating one of these eggs is said to prolong your life by up to several years. So why not give it a go?
You then take the cable car from Owakudani Station down to Togendai Station. This is the longest cable car in Japan, and there are glass windows on all four sides of the gondola, giving you ample opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Once you’re down at Togendai Station, you’ll board a boat and sail across the picturesque Lake Ashi. A volcanic eruption some 3,000 years ago created the crater of this beautiful crater lake. From the boat, you can enjoy the beautiful view over the water and the surrounding mountains bordering the lake.
The last visit of the day is Hakone Shrine, which stands in the crater lake close to the shore. You may even be lucky enough to catch the day’s last glimpse of Mount Fuji.
You will then be driven back to Tokyo and dropped off close to the west exit of Shinjuku station, from which you will make your own way back to your hotel.
