Tulia Amboseli Safari Camp

Situated in a private area of natural beauty, just outside Amboseli National Park (and without a fence separating it from the national park), is the extremely charming Tulia camp.

We’re almost tempted to call it a “boutique camp”. Your blood pressure drops as soon as you arrive. Amboseli can be very dusty, but the entrance to the camp is almost like stepping into an oasis, and you can almost physically feel your heart rate lowering and the dust settling.

There are 29 tents here, which are spacious and well appointed. There aren’t a lot of frills here, but everything has been thought of anyway. All tents have their own veranda – some of them even have their own plunge pool –  and there is a view of Kilimanjaro from all of them.

The whole camp runs on solar cells, and they’ve really thought about things. For example, to save on electricity, you get hot water in thermos jugs in your tent, so you can still make a cup of coffee and sit on your veranda overlooking the mountain, but without each individual tent having to use electricity to boil water. All laundry is done by hand. It requires less electricity, saves on soap, is less wearing on the fabric – and it creates jobs. The vegetables are grown in the kitchen garden, and the kitchen tantalises your taste buds.

As the park is located in a private area, it is possible to purchase additional activities which are not permitted in the national park. A game drive just after sunset is probably our favourite.

Suffice it to say, we’re pretty much in love with Tulia!
