THE TOUR IN SHORT

On this tour, we’ve combined the adventure in Kenya with relaxation at the end.

First, safari awaits you at one of Kenya’s smallest national parks. In Amboseli, you have a stunning view of snow-capped Kilimanjaro. The climate here is dry and the vegetation is sparse, making it very easy to spot the wildlife.

In Nairobi, you have the opportunity to customise your tour and purchase an excursion to one of the area’s biggest attractions.

From here, you head through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha, where you enjoy a boat trip on the lake, which is particularly famous for its hippos and abundant wildlife.

In the world-famous Masai Mara game reserve, you have the chance to get right up close to the Big 5 and all manner of prey. There is also the opportunity to visit the tall, red-clad Masai in their villages.

After this adventure, it’s time to chill in wonderful Zanzibar, where you can relax on the white sandy beaches, explore the historic Stone Town, savour the island’s spices and exotic fruits, take a boat trip in a traditional dhow or explore the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Flight to Kenya

Today is departure day, and you will be flying to Kenya with connecting flight(s) on the way.

Day 2: Nairobi – Amboseli National Park

Outside the airport, you will be met by your driver for the next few days and you will head south to Amboseli National Park. Depending on when you arrive, you will either eat lunch on the way or when you arrive at the lodge. With a little luck, the first game drive of the tour awaits you this afternoon.

Day 3: Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park might be one of Kenya’s smallest, but great experiences await you here. The park is especially famous for its large herds of elephants, many of which have huge tusks. The sparse vegetation in Amboseli makes it easier to spot the wild animals. If you’re interested in birds, you won’t be disappointed in Amboseli, as parts of the park remain swamp-like all year round. You have a packed lunch with you today, which allows you to spend the whole day in the park.

Day 4: Amboseli – Nairobi

The sight of the elephants with Kilimanjaro in the background is one of the most iconic images of Africa. The mountain is most visible early in the morning or late in the afternoon, so if you didn’t get the perfect picture yesterday, you have another chance today. The day starts with another game drive in Amboseli, before heading north to Nairobi after lunch. You will spend a single night here, and this evening you have the option of buying dinner at the world-renowned Carnivore restaurant.

Day 5: Experiences in Nairobi – Lake Naivasha

This morning offers you the opportunity to customise your tour. It is possible to purchase an excursion to one of Nairobi’s major sights. You might like to visit Karen Blixen’s former farm, or perhaps you’d rather see David Sheldrick’s famous elephant orphanage?

After lunch, you drive to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake located at the highest point of the Great Rift Valley, 1,890 metres above sea level. A boat trip on the lake awaits you in the afternoon. The area is especially well-known for its hippos, giraffes, waterbucks, vervet monkeys and profusion of birds, both sedentary and migratory.

Day 6: Lake Naivasha – Masai Mara

The tour today heads from Lake Naivasha to Masai Mara. It’s a long drive, but it gives you a really good insight into how life is lived in Kenya. Sit back in your seat and enjoy the scenery and villages zipping by outside. Keep in mind that there is both Wi-Fi and power in the car, so it’s possible to share holiday snaps with your loved ones at home.

First, you drive past the age-old Longnot volcano, before turning west into Masai country. Along the road, you will see lots of men dressed in bright red costumes. The Masai have no tradition of cultivating the soil, but they have cattle, which graze between the giraffes, zebras and other savannah herbivores.

Depending on the time available and the traffic, a short stop is made in Narok, which is the capital of the Masai. The villages outside the windows are gradually replaced by more and more wild animals, and you know that Masai Mara is just around the corner.

You also have the option of visiting a Masai village on the tour. This should be arranged with the guide. It costs 25 USD per person (not included in the price of the holiday) and this is paid directly to the Masai people.

Day 7: Masai Mara

The entire day is devoted to a game drive in Masai Mara game reserve. You will often be given a packed lunch to eat along the way, allowing you to make the most of your time. It’s impossible to say what you’ll see on a game drive, but we can almost guarantee large herds of elephants, wildebeest, zebras, hippos, gazelles and buffaloes. And with prey come the predators: lions, hyenas, cheetahs and leopards. But remember to keep an eye out for the smaller animals. A profusion of birds and colourful lizards are hiding in the bushes.

You will get right up close to a host of animals, which you experience from the protection of the Land Cruiser.

From July to October, you can experience the 1,200 km long migration of more than one million wildebeest along with a couple of hundred thousand zebras plus countless Thomson’s gazelles. It is during this migration that many gazelles fall victim to the huge Nile crocodiles when crossing the Mara River.

Day 8: Masai Mara – Nairobi – Zanzibar

After breakfast, you will leave Masai Mara’s amazing wildlife and return to Nairobi, where you head for your relaxing beach holiday in Zanzibar.

On your arrival in Zanzibar, you will be picked up by our local partner and driven to your hotel.

It is possible to purchase a direct flight from Masai Mara to Nairobi to avoid the drive. Contact us for a price.

Days 9-11: Relaxation and experiences on Zanzibar

The days in Zanzibar are yours to do as you please.

Located in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar consists of the main islands of Unguja (unofficially known as Zanzibar) and Pemba, as well as myriad small islands. When it comes to nature and culture, the island of Zanzibar is truly spoilt: white sandy beaches, azure sea and a stunning coral reef. A hot and sunny climate all year round. The island’s dramatic history features Arab sultans, Portuguese seafarers, slave trade and European explorers, all of which have left their mark on the island. And one of Africa’s most exciting cities, packed with beautiful Arabic architecture. Not forgetting the delicious Swahili cuisine and the friendly people.

Day 12: Departure day

You will be picked up from your hotel and driven to the airport, from which your journey home begins, with connecting flight(s) along the way.

Day 13: Arrival in the UK

You land in the UK after an exciting holiday.

Experiences in Stone Town
2 nights

If you love Marrakesh, you’ll love Stone Town too. Narrow, winding streets without pavements, constant swarms of children and adults, bicycles, donkeys and merchants peddling everything in small shops sitting right out into the road. At the square’s “barazas” (built-in benches) in the middle of the labyrinth, men sit and talk over cups of strong coffee while children play ball and a cat stretches lazily in the sun.

At first sight, the city looks quite ramshackle, but just take a look at the doors! The big, heavy, elaborately decorated wooden doors are in many ways synonymous with Zanzibar’s biggest city.

There are markets and museums here, plenty of excursion opportunities and a vibrant waterfront. During the day, the waterfront is well-frequented by locals taking strolls, young men making trips from the quay as well as fishing and tourist boats both arriving and setting off. In the evening, there is a local market here.

Stone Town is in many ways practically an experience of the senses. Here you will find smells and sounds, flavours, colours, history and culture – Stone Town has it all. It is no mystery that the town is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
