This is the classic Kenya tour with the biggest highlights. From the elephants of Amboseli, the tour takes you to the hippos of Lake Naivasha before concluding in Masai Mara.
This tour is for travellers who want to experience Kenya’s highlights.
The tour begins in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, where you will stay for one night. The next morning, the tour heads towards one of Kenya’s smallest national parks; Amboseli. The park is especially known for its large herds of elephants, which often pose with Kilimanjaro in the background. The park is flat as a pancake, the climate is dry and the vegetation sparse, making it very easy to spot the wild animals.
The drive from Amboseli to Lake Naivasha goes through stunning landscapes at Great Rift Valley towards Lake Naivasha, known for its hippos and diverse birdlife. In the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve, the Big 5 are obviously the big draw – along with all kinds of prey. There is also an opportunity to visit the tall red-clad Maasai in their villages.
A classic Kenya tour with the greatest highlights.
Today, you depart for Kenya by plane. There will be connecting flight(s) along the way.
On your arrival in Kenya, you will be met at the airport and driven to your hotel.
If you land already in the morning, you can choose to purchase one of our excursions as an add-on, so that you can start experiencing Kenya already on your day of arrival.
You will be picked up at your hotel in the morning and be driven south towards Amboseli National Park. After lunch at your hotel, the first safari experience of the tour awaits you. Enjoy the afternoon and Kilimanjaro at sunset.
Amboseli National Park might be one of Kenya’s smallest national parks, but great experiences await you here. One of the most classic images of Africa is the photo of a large herd of elephants in the middle of the savannah with Mt Kilimanjaro in the background. Then you know you’re in Africa! Ideally, get up early today and enjoy the sunrise – the mountain is often clearest at daybreak.
The elephants are the reason the park is so famous. You’d be hard-pressed to find bigger elephants – with bigger tusks – anywhere else in Africa. The sparse vegetation in the park also makes it easier to spot the animals here than elsewhere. The park also offers a profusion of birds. You have a packed lunch with you today, which allows you to spend the whole day in the park – lunch is usually eaten on top of a small mound, which affords a phenomenal view of both the swampy and bone-dry areas of Amboseli.
You say goodbye to Kilimanjaro and head towards Nairobi. A lunch stop is made in the capital before the tour continues through the hilly landscape around Great Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha. Along the way (if the weather is clear), you will make a stop at a belvedere, from which there are phenomenal views of the spectacular Great Rift Valley, which stretches all the way through the African continent from the Middle East to Mozambique. Researchers believe that this rift system will eventually cause the African continental plate to split into two separate continental plates, thus tearing a large part of the African continent apart from the rest.
You will arrive at Lake Naivasha in the afternoon, and you can spend the rest of the day enjoying the lodge and the tranquil natural surroundings by the lake. But do not go too close to the shore of the lakee – there are hippos in abundance!
Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake located at the highest point of Great Rift Valley at 1890 metres above sea level. A boat trip on the lake is one of the big highlights here – and that is exactly how you will start your morning. The area is known for hippos, giraffes, waterbucks, velvet monkeys and a rich and varied bird life with both resident and migratory birds.
Past noon, the tour heads towards Masai Mara. Traffic in Kenya can be unpredictable, so the rest of the day is devoted to getting to Masai Mara. Sit back and relax in your seat, bring your favourite snack and an audiobook or music to listen to, and enjoy the sight of Kenya gliding by outside the windows.
First you will drive past the old volcano Longnot, from where the tour heads westwards into Maasai country. Here you will see lots of men dressed in the festive red plaid. The Maasai have no tradition of cultivating the land; they have cattle that graze among giraffes, zebras and other herbivores of the savannah. You drive through local villages, with lively marketplaces, and in many places the locals also wave to the passengers in the cars.
A short stop is often made in Narok, which is the capital of the Maasai, before you continue towards the Masai Mara. As the number of villages diminishes, the number of wild animals increases.
There will be an opportunity to visit a Maasai village during the drive. You must agree this with your guide. It costs USD 25 per person (not included in the tour price), payable directly to the Maasai.
Today, you’re going on a full-day game drive in Masai Mara game reserve – the Kenyan part of the vast Serengeti ecosystem and, in the rainy season, home to probably the world’s largest concentration of wildlife.
Masai Mara needs no further introduction. On the mighty plains, you will encounter large herds of elephants, wildebeest, zebras, hippos, giraffes, gazelles and other herbivorous prey of the hunting lions, hyenas, leopards and cheetahs.
You will get right up close to a host of animals, which you experience from the protection of the Land Cruiser.
From July to October, you can experience the 1,200 km long migration of more than one million wildebeest along with a couple of hundred thousand zebras plus countless Thomson’s gazelles. It is during this migration that many gazelles fall victim to the huge Nile crocodiles when crossing the Mara River.
After breakfast, you will leave Masai Mara’s amazing wildlife and drive to Nairobi – a drive through the spectacular Great Rift Valley via the town of Narok.
After lunch, you will continue to the airport, from which the journey home starts with connecting flight(s) on the way. You can also purchase a tour to Uganda’s lush Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, where you can get right up close to the unique mountain gorillas. It’s an extraordinary experience to observe the gentle creatures at close range.
It is possible to purchase a direct flight from Masai Mara to Nairobi to avoid the drive. Contact us for a price.
You land in the UK after an exciting holiday.
