Exploration on foot in Luang Prabang

At 8.30–9.00 am, you meet the guide at the starting point of the tour at Hotel Sofitel. Built as the former governor’s residence in 1900, Hotel Sofitel, with its fortresses and lookout towers, is a prime example of a colonial mansion. At the nearby visitor centre, you can experience the story of the bombing of Laos between 1964 and 1973, and at the monument of President Souphanouvong, you hear the story of the first president of Communist-controlled Laos. Outside the city walls, you will then visit Wat Manorom, which is the temple of Luang Prabang with the largest circle of associated monks. The temple is believed to have been built either in 1372 or in 1492, and the city’s oldest and largest Buddha statue, which stands 6 metres high and is made of bronze, is housed here.

In the Viengxay district, which is under strong Vietnamese influence, you can see and taste the local food sold at the small roadside stalls. At several buildings and ponds along the way, you will see UNESCO signs indicating that the site is protected by UNESCO. At Hotel Amantaka, you will experience yet another example of the beautiful colonial architecture and visit the hotel’s current art exhibition. You walk on through the beautiful streets with shady trees where the everyday life of the Laotians takes place. Here, you will visit a small soap factory that helps children with hygiene and health as part of a social project. The tour ends at Hotel Sofitel.
