Tsara Komba

Technically, it’s not entirely accurate to say Tsara Komba is on Nosy Be. In fact, Nosy Komba is its own island located off Nosy Be, and this is where you’ll find Tsara Komba. 

This small volcanic island, Nosy Komba, often dubbed “the lemur island,” is nestled between Nosy Be and the mainland, offering a remarkable blend of rainforest and coral reefs. 

Luxuriant vegetation cascades down the mountain slopes right into the sea, separated only by a pristine white sandy beach. 

The rainforest is home to scores of birds and a small number of black lemurs, while the sea houses beautiful coral reefs and colourful fish – and during the season (September to December), even whale sharks. 

The island isn’t completely deserted. Approximately 4,000 residents live here, and there’s a modest range of hotels. One of the absolute best is Tsara Komba. 

There are only 8 bungalows here, so if you’re dreaming of upgrading to Tsara Komba, be sure to book well in advance! Each bungalow is crafted from natural materials that blend seamlessly with the rainforest’s palm trees, bougainvillea, and jasmine, featuring stunning sea views from the veranda. It’s worth noting there’s no air conditioning (though there is a fan), but true to Malagasy style, doors and windows can be opened to create a cooling airflow through the suites. 

All bungalows naturally come with their own bathroom, where the shower is outdoors, ensuring you’re never far from nature. 

Meals are enjoyed at the restaurant, where great care is taken with the food. The stay includes full board. 

We suppose you’ll likely spend most of your time on your veranda with a good book or just gazing at the views, perhaps punctuated by a swim or snorkelling session, but Nosy Komba also has a spa offering a fine selection of treatments. It’s also enticing to take a hike on the island. If you’d like to have a guide, this can be arranged through the hotel. 

The boat trip from Nosy Be takes just over half an hour, and the supplementary price includes the boat transfer.
