Full-day tour to historic Malacca
Immerse yourself in the winds of history on a fascinating journey through Melaka, which in the 15th century was one of Southeast Asia’s largest empires, and today is listed on the UNESCO world heritage list with its old city quarters.
You will be picked up from your hotel around 8 o’clock and driven approximately 2 hours south to Melaka. Here, you will effortlessly soak up history as you explore the ruins of Southeast Asia’s oldest European-colonial buildings. One such building is the impressive Portuguese fortress, A Famosa, constructed in 1511 to protect the Portuguese’s new colony. Over the years, A Famosa changed hands multiple times after fierce battles with other great powers, resulting in much of the fortress now lying in ruins.
Atop St. Paul’s Hill, you’ll find the ruins of St. Paul’s Church, one of the region’s oldest churches and a key part of the city’s historical heritage. Originally built in 1521 by the Portuguese captain Duarte Coelho, it served as a place of Catholic worship under Portuguese rule. From the hilltop, you can also enjoy a breathtaking view over Melaka.
Next, the tour proceeds to the charming Dutch Square, surrounded by blooming gardens, wrought iron lampposts, and the iconic red-painted buildings that immediately catch your eye. Here, you can visit the 300-year-old Dutch Church, Malaysia’s oldest Protestant church.
After crossing the Melaka River, you will reach the city’s historic heart, the Street of Harmony. Here, you will encounter cultural landmarks such as the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the Kampung Kling Mosque, and the Arulmigu Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthy Temple, each offering a unique insight into Malaysia’s diverse cultural heritage. You can also enjoy a delicious lunch prepared according to Melaka’s rich culinary traditions.
With your taste buds satisfied, the tour continues. You’ll board a small, covered boat for a 40-minute cruise along the historic routes of the Melaka River. The river has been central to the city’s history, as it was a crucial trading hub for the entire Southeast Asian region from the 15th century onward. Today, the river offers a different perspective of Melaka’s charming cityscape from the one you’ve just experienced on land. Sit back and enjoy the views of cobbled streets, old bridges, and colourful merchant houses as you gently glide along.
After the boat tour, you will visit the traditional Malay village of Kampung Morten. Here, you will experience the charming Villa Sentosa, which today functions as a living museum. The house remains almost intact with a treasure trove of period furniture, photographs, porcelain, and antiques, each telling stories of the house’s and the village’s past.
Round off the day’s historical events at Melaka’s oldest bar, Sin Hiap Hin, which exudes rustic charm. Enjoy the atmosphere and one of their delightful drinks before it’s time to be driven back to the modern metropolis of Kuala Lumpur.
