Kuala Selangor and the glowing fireflies
Join an unforgettable excursion to Kuala Selangor, where you’ll discover historic landmarks, stunning views, and fascinating wildlife. As the day draws to a close, enjoy a magical boat trip through mangrove forests, illuminated by the glow of fireflies lighting up the evening.
In the afternoon, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and driven to the town of Kuala Selangor, located an hour and 15 minutes northwest of Kuala Lumpur. The town is renowned for its tranquil atmosphere, picturesque surroundings, and historical sites.
Your first stop is the royal tomb, Makam Diraja, the resting place of several of Selangor’s sultans and their families. Then, the tour continues to the Bukit Melawati fort, perched atop Bukit Melawati Hill, offering a magnificent view of the area and the Straits of Malacca. Originally built by the Dutch in 1766 as a military stronghold to protect the region from pirates and other threats, the fort was later expanded by British colonisers and has played a key role in Malaysia’s colonial history. Here, you’ll have time to explore the original buildings and ancient cannons. There’s also an old lighthouse, built to aid seafarers navigating the Straits of Malacca.
Next, enjoy a delicious seafood dinner at a local restaurant, offering beautiful views of the river bathed in the light of the setting sun.
The evening concludes in the charming village of Kampung Kuantan in Kuala Selangor, where an enchanting experience awaits. You’ll board a traditional rowboat and, accompanied by your guide, glide along the Selangor River through the lush mangrove forest. Here, you can admire thousands of fireflies synchronously twinkling among the mangrove trees, creating an utterly magical experience. Their dancing lights transform the landscape into a nearly fairy-tale scene. Only rowboats are used in order to minimise disturbances to the fireflies’ habitat and to protect the surrounding ecosystem.
After this wonderful experience, you will be driven back to your hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
