Like its sister hotel Paraíso del Mar, Palapas del Mar has a fantastic location right next to Isla Holbox’s fantastic beach. The hotel has slightly fewer rooms than its sister hotel, and the atmosphere is a little more intimate and undisturbed here.
As ‘palapas’ in the hotel’s name suggests, the hotel is built in the beautiful Mexican style with thatched palapas roofs on whitewashed buildings. Palapas del Mar has a rustic and natural beauty that blends well with the tropical surroundings. It is truly fascinating to gaze up in the hotel’s reception and observe the beautiful construction.
You will be welcomed with a refreshing cool welcoming drink, and a staff member will help transport your luggage to your room. It is, in fact, not easy pulling your suitcase through the sand – and, yes, all the paths around the hotel consist of sand.
The hotel only has 58 rooms, elegantly decorated in light colours with atmospheric Mexican art on the walls. They are all furnished with a private bathroom with toiletries and a hairdryer, air conditioning, ceiling fan, safe, Wi-Fi, TV, fridge and either a small terrace or balcony with a hammock.
Please note that the Wi-Fi connection on Holbox may be a bit slow.
For an additional fee, you can get a room with your own small pool (sometimes shared by two rooms) and partial sea view/sea view.
The hotel has two restaurants: a main restaurant, which is open all day, and a sushi restaurant, which is only open in the evening. In the main restaurant, your included breakfast is served as a sumptuous buffet with a large selection of fruit, bread, pastries, eggs and delicious freshly squeezed juice. Enjoying your breakfast under the open sky in a tropical setting to the sound of the waves gently breaking against the shore is nothing short of magical.
The restaurant is also open during the day for lunch and dinner, and you can buy both buffet and a la carte dishes from the menu.
Some evenings, a barbecue buffet is arranged under the open sky with lit lanterns. Enquire about the dates at the reception.
It is also possible to purchase an all-inclusive package, so that all meals, snacks and local beverages are included during your stay.
The sushi restaurant Tamashi is located on top of the main restaurant and offers fantastic views of the sea. It is a perfect place for enjoying a cool drink while the sun sets. They have also built an exclusive rooftop lounge area with a small infinity pool where you can sunbathe during the day.
In extension of the main restaurant is the swimming pool and the adjoining pool bar, where you can swim for something cold to drink without having to get out of the pool first. There are both sun loungers around the pool and in the hotel’s garden, where you can read a good book in the shade of a palm tree. If you cross the small sandy road, you will find yourself on Holbox’s famous beach with azure waters and a warm sea breeze. Here, there are also sun loungers for free use, and you can, of course, order food and beverages to be brought down here to pamper yourself a little extra.
At the hotel, you can also rent bicycles or purchase a stress-relieving massage.
The hotel is located in the quiet and undisturbed part of Holbox, but you are still just a 10-minute walk from the town, where you will find a large selection of nice shops, cafés, bars and restaurants.
