Excursion to Islas Ballestas
Join us on this exciting excursion to Islas Ballestas, also known as the mini-Galapagos.
You will be picked up very early this morning at your hotel and driven to the bus station in Lima. From here, you will take the bus southwards to Paracas, where you will experience the wildlife on the islands of Islas Ballestas. The journey from Lima takes approx. 4 hours, so you can sit back in your seat and take a little nap.
Islas Ballestas have a unique wildlife and has therefore been nicknamed the mini-Galapagos. The group of islands consists mainly of rocks eroded by the sea, which has formed beautiful rock formations.
The group of islands is the country’s most important bird and marine sanctuary and has a rich population of seabirds, including cormorants, seagulls and the blue-footed gannet, which is also found on the Galapagos Islands. At the islands, you can also see sea lions, which occasionally swim close to the boats, and Humboldt penguins, which have been brought here from Antarctica by the powerful Humboldt current. You may also be lucky enough to spot dolphins or migrating humpback whales along the way. People are not allowed to go ashore on the islands, as they are protected, but the boat trip makes it possible to experience the animals at close range.
On the boat trip, you will also see ‘La Candelabra’ at the northernmost point of the Paracas Peninsula. La Candelabra is a huge drawing in the dry desert sand, depicting a three-armed candlestick or a cactus, which was a symbol of power in the Chavín culture. It is not known who made the drawing or its purpose.
The boat trip lasts approx. 2 hours, after which you can have lunch (at your own expense) before hopping on the bus again and heading back to Lima. You will arrive at your hotel in the evening.
