The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy
Your guide/driver will pick you up from the hotel and drive you to the Temple of the Tooth, which is situated by Kandy Lake.
The sacred Buddhist temple is probably the main reason for Kandy’s inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998. The temple is said to contain one of the Buddha’s teeth, which is said to have been smuggled to Sri Lanka in the hair of a princess in 1590. It is now preserved in a gold casket, behind a wealth of lotus flowers. The casket is opened once a year, drawing flocks of pilgrims to the temple for a glimpse of the tooth. This takes place during the major annual Esala Perahara procession in July and August.
A temple ceremony is held three times a day and is a unique experience. Your guide will show you around, giving you a fascinating insight into the temple’s history and significance.
