In the southern part of Madagascar, you’ll find the Anja Reserve. Although it’s relatively small, it’s part of an incredibly exciting project. At TourCompass, we’ve decided that all our travellers heading to this region of Madagascar should visit the reserve.

Naturally, we’ve included a visit to the reserve because it’s one of the best places in all of Madagascar to spot ring-tailed lemurs – often up close and personal.

But we’ve also included it because we want to support this unique opportunity for the local community to earn a living while helping them conserve and expand the reserve.

Visitors are only allowed into the Anja Reserve with a local guide from one of the villages involved in the project. The revenues from these visits benefit the participating villages and contribute to initiatives such as education, mosquito nets, tree planting, and the conservation and expansion of the reserve.

The reserve has been in existence since 2001 and is one of the oldest ‘community-driven’ projects in Madagascar.
