In Costa Rica’s Tortuguero National Park, we are delighted to collaborate with Laguna Lodge.

The name Tortuguero is derived from the Spanish word “tortuga” (turtle), and the park is renowned for its turtles. From February to July, the green sea turtle, the leatherback turtle, and the two species of turtles known as the hawksbill and loggerhead come to lay their eggs along the Caribbean coast, especially within Tortuguero National Park. All these species are endangered; hence, it’s crucial that everyone works together to preserve the natural habitat and wildlife in the area. Laguna Lodge plays a significant role in this conservation effort.

Laguna Lodge is nestled in the stunning natural surroundings of Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast in a location that can only be reached by plane or boat.

The few small villages on this remote narrow strip of land are almost entirely dependent on tourism. It’s thus exceedingly important that the villagers benefit from tourism and share in the revenue.

Laguna Lodge primarily employs staff from the local community – in fact, they proudly boast that 98% of their employees are from Tortuguero.

Furthermore, the lodge is very active in the local community, participating in the organisation of local festivals and supporting the education of the area’s youth. All these initiatives provide the local population with a sense of belonging and motivation to care for their community.

The ecosystem in the region is extremely fragile, and tourism has heightened the community’s awareness of the importance of protecting its nature.
