Meeru Maldives Resort Island is Travelife-certified and actively engages in sustainability initiatives integrated into daily operations at the resort.

Meeru has implemented sophisticated solutions to reduce water consumption. This includes a 400-ton water treatment plant that ensures wastewater is reused for garden irrigation, conserving both energy and water. Sensor-controlled taps have been installed in common areas alongside an improved drip irrigation system, reducing garden water usage. The resort aims to decrease its overall water consumption by 10%.

Meeru also invests in energy-efficient solutions to minimise its CO₂ footprint. LED lights and modern air conditioning systems make use of residual heat to heat water, and a gradual shift to ‘inverter technology’ significantly cuts down electricity usage. Additionally, the resort has introduced solar panels to lessen its reliance on fossil fuels.

Reducing plastic is another priority at Meeru. Rooms are equipped with mineral water in refillable glass bottles, and waste is managed following ‘The Five R’s’: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle. Collaboration with the environmental organisation ‘Parley for the Oceans’ ensures plastic waste is recycled instead of ending up in the ocean. The resort aims to reduce total waste by 5% and increase the use of recyclable materials.

The resort is also dedicated to protecting marine life. In its partnership with ‘Save The Beach Maldives’, 4,000 corals have been planted to restore coral reefs, and underwater cameras monitor biodiversity to ensure a healthy ecosystem. Regular beach clean-ups are organised with participation from both guests and staff.

Over 60% of Meeru’s staff are from the Maldives, and there’s a strong collaboration with the neighbouring local island, Dhiffushi, from which fresh fish and other local produce are sourced. Guests can experience local culture at the resort’s museum or visit Dhiffushi to learn more about Maldivian life. They also support local schools with educational excursions giving students insight into sustainable initiatives.

Guests are treated to delicious ingredients from the resort’s organic garden, growing over 20 different fruits and vegetables like sweet potatoes, chillies, and watermelons. This reduces the need for imported goods and ensures fresh produce for the resort’s restaurants.

The resort’s spa exclusively uses organic products that are biodegradable and packed in recycled glass.

Meeru continues to expand its sustainable efforts, with plans for more solar panels, optimised energy monitoring, and new plastic-free solutions, contributing to more-responsible tourism.

At Meeru Maldives Resort Island, a delightful holiday experience and sustainable solutions go hand in hand, allowing both you and nature to benefit from numerous green initiatives.
