Bike ride and boat trip in Chiang Mai, off the beaten track
You will be picked up from the hotel and driven to the starting point of today’s bike ride, where you will experience Chiang Mai off the beaten track. Once your bicycle has been adjusted, and you have received your mandatory bicycle helmet, your guide will tell you about the route, which is about 5 km long and which will proceed at a gentle pace over level terrain.
You will cycle to the lost city of Wiang Kun Kam, which is of great cultural and historical importance. This was the original capital of the Lanna empire, which was founded by King Mangrai. After a massive flood, the city disappeared without a trace, and the king moved the capital to Chiang Mai. Many believed that Wiang Kun Kam was simply an old wives’ tale, as the city was buried at a depth of 1–4 metres for more than 200 years. It wasn’t until 1984 that the ruin was rediscovered and excavations began. You will among other things visit the beautiful temple ruins of Wat Pupia, Wat E-Kang, Wat Chang Kham and Wat Chedi Liam with its impressive, intact chedi. The guide will tell you about them on the way, and he really knows his history!
You may be lucky enough to cycle past a street vendor selling the popular Thai desserts, fried bananas and “kanom kai hong”, which are also known as swan eggs and have a taste similar to doughnuts.
After exploring the majestic ancient city, you will continue to Wat Chai Mongkhon, situated on the Ping River. Here, you will go on a pleasant boat ride, taking you past old teak houses and beautiful scenery.
At midday, the boat will dock at a traditional farmhouse, where you will be served a delicious northern Thai lunch.
You will then be driven back to your hotel.
