Bioluminescence and canoeing in Phang Nga Bay

This unique and memorable tour offers a spectacular afternoon and evening on the water around Phang Nga Bay where you will be able to experience the incredible natural phenomenon of ‘bioluminescence’ and try exciting sea kayaking activities as well as enjoy a delicious meal.

But what exactly is bioluminescence? You might be wondering. Well, it’s the ability of some organisms to emit light, which can be found in numerous forms in the area around Phang Nga Bay. One of the most remarkable of these is the bioluminescent plankton found in the waters of the bay. These tiny organisms emit a bright blue-green light when disturbed, creating an enchanting sight in the water. The phenomenon is due to chemical reactions inside the plankton, which produce light as a by-product.

The first two stops on the tour take place at Phanak Island and Hong Island. A sea kayak is the perfect way to experience the many rock formations and hidden lagoons around the islands, as it provides a unique opportunity to get right up close to nature.

Next stop on the tour is the iconic island of Koh Tapu, also known as “James Bond Island”. You may recognise the remarkable landscape as the location provided the setting for several famous scenes in the James Bond film “The Man with The Golden Gun”. A wonderful dinner will be served here at a local restaurant, which can be enjoyed with a view of an enchanting sunset.

Having enjoyed the sunset, it’s the perfect time to experience the bioluminescence to the full. As the sun sets and evening approaches, the water becomes calmer, making the light from the plankton more visible. You may also be lucky enough to experience the beautiful sight of the glowing light in the water. The combination of sea kayaking, scenic landscapes and the bioluminescent water makes for a unique and enchanting experience you won’t forget in a hurry.

NB: The route is subject to change depending on the sea level on the day.
