The Doi Suthep Temple
A visit to Chiang Mai is not complete without a visit to the temple on the mountain, Doi Suthep.
You’ll be picked up from the hotel and driven out of the city and up Doi Suthep, after which the temple, which was founded as far back as 1383, is named. Exotic shrubs and trees bloom around you, and the air becomes a little cooler as you approach the top.
The car is parked here, and a walk up the very beautifully adorned staircase awaits. The mosaic “bannister” is shaped like a giant mythical snake, Naga, who is said to guard the temple. There are 309 steps to the top, but many stops are made along the way to admire the stairs! If the idea of all those steps is too much for you, you can take the cable car to the top of the mountain, where the temple itself is located.
The temple is, of course, the highlight. The large gold-clad pagoda at the heart of the temple is the most sacred place, but the smaller pagodas, statues and the large bells also take most people’s breath away. It is said to bring good luck if you ring the bells. Occasionally, you may be lucky enough to meet an orange-robed monk up here.
Once you’ve absorbed all the details of the temple, it’s time to turn around. In front of you is Chiang Mai. The view from the top of the mountain is absolutely stunning, and you may find yourself questioning whether it is the temple or the view that is most breathtaking. But beautiful it is!
After the temple tour, you will be driven back to your hotel.
