Half-day sightseeing tour in Hué
On this sightseeing tour, you will visit two of Hué’s greatest attractions: the Imperial Citadel and the complex surrounding Emperor Tu Duc’s tomb. Both places are UNESCO World Heritage sites as architectural gems with a remarkable structure and design from the early 19th century.
The guide will pick you up from the hotel, and the tour will start on the northern side of the Perfume River at the Imperial Citadel. Surrounded by a 10 km-long wall and moat, the citadel covers an area of 520 hectares. It served both as Vietnam’s political and military power base and the imperial residence during the Nguyen dynasty, the last feudal dynasty of Vietnam, from 1802 to 1945. Hidden behind the walls are several palaces, the imperial residence and its mansions and temples, the Royal Theatre and the Forbidden Purple City, to which only the imperial family had access. It’s hard not to be impressed by all the fine details on the distinctive gold-plated red doors.
The tour continues with a visit to one of Hué’s most picturesque mausoleums: Emperor Tu Duc’s tomb. Emperor Tu Duc ruled for 34 years, making him the longest-serving emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. The tomb was built from 1864–1867, and Tu Duc designed it himself for his own use both before and after his death. The result is reminiscent of a miniature royal palace with pavilions and temples set in scenic surroundings on Lake Luu Khiem.
After a few wonderful hours, you head back to your hotel.
